Understanding a Browser Autofill Issue in React Forms

While working with React forms, developers sometimes encounter a strange little behavior when the browser’s autofill feature comes into play. At first glance, everything looks normal: the browser neatly fills in the email or password field, just like it is supposed to. But then something odd happens.

The text may become difficult to edit, validation might fail, or React may suddenly overwrite the value. This confusing behavior occurs because the browser and React handle form inputs in very different ways.

The Role of Modern Browsers

Modern browsers are designed to help users save time. They remember commonly entered information such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, and passwords. When a similar form appears again, the browser automatically fills those fields. From the user’s perspective, this is extremely convenient because it reduces typing and speeds up login or registration processes.

React’s Controlled Approach

React, however, follows a more controlled approach when dealing with forms. In many React applications, input fields are implemented as controlled components. This means that the value inside the input field is managed by React’s state.

Every time a user types something, an event such as onChange is triggered, and React updates the state accordingly. Because of this design, React keeps the displayed input value and the internal application state perfectly synchronized.

A Typical Controlled Input

A typical controlled input in React looks something like this:

Inside the component, the state logic might look like this:

This setup ensures that React always knows what the current value of the input field is. In other words, React is the system in charge of the input.

The Conflict: Autofill vs. State

The interesting part begins when the browser autofill system gets involved. Instead of triggering the usual React events, the browser directly inserts the saved value into the input field in the DOM.

From the browser’s perspective, this is completely normal behavior. However, React never receives the onChange event it expects. As a result:

  • State Mismatch: React still believes that the input field contains the old value, while the browser visually shows a new autofilled value.
  • Overwriting: When React re-renders the component, it may overwrite the autofilled value with the state value, making it appear as if the input suddenly cleared itself.
  • Validation Issues: Form validation may fail because React still believes the field is empty even though the user sees text.

Root Cause

The root cause is that browser autofill bypasses React’s synthetic event system. React listens for events such as input, change, or keydown in order to detect updates in form fields. Autofill may update the value without triggering these events in the way React expects, which breaks the synchronization between the DOM and the React state.

This situation is not exactly a bug in React or in the browser. Instead, it is the result of two different systems trying to control the same input element. The browser assumes it can insert saved values directly, while React assumes it is the single source of truth for that input field.
